The Platypus FDE Blueprint
The Blueprint is the framework behind our FDE work. It helps a company decide whether it needs Forward Deployed Engineers, what shape the function should take and how to tell whether it is working.
The short version
An FDE closes the gap between what a product can do today and what a customer needs in order to get value. That role is useful only when the work teaches the company something reusable—about the product, the market or the delivery capability.
The Blueprint works through nine questions:
- Do you need FDEs at all? Start with the deployment problem, not the title.
- Where does the compounding asset live? In a product you sell, or a delivery capability you keep?
- How mature is the product? Product maturity determines how much autonomy the field needs.
- What is the smallest team that can own an outcome? Avoid separating the customer context from the ability to build.
- How does the field work with product, sales and steady-state delivery? The interfaces define the function.
- What should improve over time? Measure leverage, people required per deployment and time to customer value.
- Who should you hire? Test judgment, learning speed and ownership as well as technical ability.
- How does the model fail? Common failures include copying the title, weak product feedback and rewarding attendance rather than outcomes.
- What should change next? Apply the framework to the company and turn it into a small number of concrete decisions.
Two coherent models
| Product company | Services company | |
|---|---|---|
| Compounding asset | A product customers buy | A delivery capability the firm keeps |
| FDE's role | Discover what the product must become | Deliver better outcomes with increasing leverage |
| Healthy direction | Fewer FDEs needed as the product matures | More impact delivered per FDE |
| Main risk | Custom work never becomes product | Linear consulting under a new title |
Both models can work. Problems begin when a company operates one while hiring, measuring or selling as though it were the other.
The FDE Readiness Assessment applies the Blueprint to one organisation. Practical templates and longer-form guidance are available in the open FDE Advisory Materials.
